Adding an extra room to your house doesn’t have to be expensive, and there are a few ways to do it cheaply. Consider these tips for adding a room without spending a fortune. With creativity and hard work, you can add the extra space you need without breaking the bank with a little creativity and some hard work.

Cheapest Way to Add a Room to House

Adding a new room is often the most effective way to accommodate growth when families outgrow their house. However, building an addition may be too expensive if you have a tight budget. Fortunately, several less expensive methods exist to extend your home by utilizing unused space or constructing a simpler building for more living areas.

Finish Basement

One of the most cost-effective methods to create space in your home is to finish off existing areas. If you have an unfinished basement in your house, it’s simple to turn it into a functional area that may be utilized as a family room, lounge, home gym, workstation, or guest bedroom.

Because the bones of the structure are already in place, finishing the area requires less money. Walls might need to be framed and insulated, while flooring is generally needed. Electrical and plumbing installation may be required as well.

Contractors or basement finishing businesses may be costly, so you may want to outsource the work. However, if you are a skilled handyman, you may save money by doing the job yourself if you are a skilled handyman.

Convert Attic

Finishing a basement, converting an attic, or adding a room to your home for very little money is another easy option. A converted attic is frequently used as an extra bedroom for a growing family, but it might also be used as a home office, gym, or playroom for your children.

Finishing an attic is more difficult than finishing a basement since attics often have gable slopes or irregular angles owing to their proximity to the roof. Make sure the ceiling in your attic is at least 8 feet tall before deciding whether it’s suitable for conversion.

The height requirement for floor-to-ceiling building codes is generally 7 feet above the living space. Insulation is generally needed in walls, and the room must be properly ventilated to avoid being excessively hot or too chilly in the winter.

Finish Garage

You may convert your garage if you still need an additional area after completing your basement and converting your attic or if these locations aren’t suitable for finishing. Garage apartments are ideal for older children or relatives who stay with you, but the room can also be used as a home office or gym.

The project is cheap since the foundation, walls, roof, and wiring are already in place. To cover the area, you may need to insulate the walls and extend your home’s heating and cooling system. A level cement floor can usually replace floating flooring or carpeting inexpensively.

If you have a regular garage door, consider replacing it with French doors or framing a new wall to provide additional natural light. Plumbing work is also required if you intend to use the space as a bedroom and want to add a bathroom.

Add a Sunroom

While adding a sunroom to your basement, attic, or garage is not an option, the most inexpensive room expansion is almost always a sunroom. While it costs more to construct than any refinishing job, it typically costs about $10,000 less on average.

According to Remodeling Magazine’s 2010-2011 Cost vs Value Report. On the other hand, a sunroom does not have to be as expensive to erect as a brick-and-mortar addition since it usually comprises entirely of windows. You may save even more money by doing the job yourself rather than hiring a contractor for a sunroom addition with a do-it-yourself kit.

These kits are available from multiple sources and come in various styles so that you can match your home’s decor.

Bottom Line:

There are several ways to add a room to your house without spending a fortune. You can finish your basement, convert your attic, or add a new room to your garage. You can also build a sunroom as an addition to your home.
